Gosh, I’ve been used to my best-sized iPad for a long time now. I discovered that when I was allowed to test an Android tablet again. Similar in size to the iPad mini. The Asus Nexus 7 is a Google tablet, size 7 inches. Kind of handy and just fits in your breast pocket.
Appearance
In terms of appearance, this tablet is designed quite simply. Functional, as we are used to from Google (in collaboration with various manufacturers meanwhile). Round corners, just an aluminum (I guess) edge visible and a back with a dotted pattern to give it a bit more grip. On the back you see large ‘Nexus’ and ‘Asus’, there is also the fairly large cutout for the speaker. Furthermore, the audio jack, micro-usputput, on / off buttons and volume buttons on the side. There is also a camera on the front for video calling. No home button, it’s in the software.
Hardware
Let’s talk about build quality first. To be honest it is a bit mediocre. The back is not supposed to come off, but I was able to tinker it off with little effort. So you are right at the heart of the device. Nice to see, not one of them. So be a little careful with the device when you buy it.
For the rest: the IPS screen (1280×800 pixels) is protected with scratch-resistant Corning glass. You can at least leave it in your bag with other messes. There is a fairly reasonable battery (4325mAh) with which you can still go for a day (about 10 hours) if you surf a bit or read books.
De 1.2 megapixel camera is gewoon echt bedoeld om te videobellen, verder nergens voor. Er zit dan ook geen app op om foto’s mee te maken. Die kun je wel downloaden, daar niet van. Maar verwacht er dan niet al te spannende foto’s van…
Er zit een aardige processor in, een quad-core Tegra 3 van Nvidia. Die wordt ondersteund door 1GB werkgeheugen. Voor de rest kun je kiezen uit 16 of 32GB opslagruimte. Tot slot heeft de Nexus 7 ook de beschikking over NFC, dus als je ooit op een plek komt waar ze betaling via NFC regelen, dan ben je hip. Je kunt natuurlijk ook gewoon foto’s overzetten via NFC naar een ander apparaat met NFC.
Wat wifi betreft: hij maakt verbinding met alles in 2.4Ghz, helaas niet over 5Ghz. Zou ik toch een voordeel hebben gevonden als ie dat wel kon.
Software
Over de software is niet zoveel te zeggen. De Nexus 7 komt standaard met Android 4.1 Jelly Bean (mogelijk inmiddels met update naar 4.2), inclusief alle standaard Google applicaties zoals Gmail, Maps, Music, Play, Chrome, Google+ en YouTube.
With Jelly Bean, Google Now is also available, a slightly privacy-sensitive addition to your Google apps. Via a kind of ‘cards’, Google shows suggestions in different categories if you are at a certain location or if something else is triggered. I am not quite at the bottom of the concept yet, in the Netherlands it still works quite limited, I understand, but it should at least help you to do things faster and more efficiently. You can ask in Google Now if you will be on time for your appointment later, and Google will show your travel time to the door of your appointment. About. Or when you walk out the door, start Google Navigation. Pretty scary. However, it does require an internet connection, so on this Wi-Fi version, Google Now is practically useless.

Anyway, the software is otherwise just clean. Where other manufacturers often put their own functions or a complete visual shell over Android, Google (of course) likes to keep it clean. You have to be able to use what Google has to offer itself. And in general I think that Google does provide a fairly complete package. If you have a Google account and you don’t mind linking everything, all your life, to it, then you are done quickly.
The nice thing about the interface is browsing apps, for example. The screens blend a bit, the apps on the new screen slowly overlap the apps on the old screen. Difficult to explain, I tried to capture it in the photo, but I thought it was a nice feature.
But what can you do with it?
Is it a handy 7 inch tablet? Isn’t that screen too small for a tablet? I think it is not so bad. I have read a few books via third-party apps ( Google Play Books is still coming, is not yet available in the Netherlands, unfortunately), the device lends itself perfectly for that. Brightness of the screen is fine for that.
What is not convenient is the lack of 3G. For example, if you want to use Google Maps, you have to set your phone as a WiFi hotspot. In the car it is therefore not as handy as, for example, on the train. I myself find the combination of my favorite newspaper app (in which I have the newspaper downloaded at home) and free WiFi on the train to check mail and browse. If you still want 3G, there is also a 3G version available for 359 euros this month.
The tablet fits in my handbag (which is not as big as the average handbag for women nowadays) and that is an advantage. Does he type a little too? Well, it is a bit peeling, it does not go as smoothly as on the big screen of the iPad, but in practice I typed very little. You’re still swiping and tapping most of the time.
Of course you can also play games on it. The Google Play store is full of games and most of them are also free. So ideal for your kids or the break at work … And you can also watch movies and photos on it. The brightness and color fastness of the screen is really very good for that. Again, you have to download movies via third-party apps or your home server, because Google Play Movies is not yet available for the Netherlands.
Persoonlijk vind ik het jammer dat juist de entertainmentapps van Google hier in Nederland nog niet beschikbaar zijn. Volgens mij zijn wij Nederlanders namelijk prima geneigd om te betalen voor het gemak van zulke apps. En zeker op tablets als deze is wat entertainment wel een uniek verkoopargument. iTunes biedt het namelijk allemaal wel, uiteraard ook via Apple TV, en daar heeft Apple dus nog een dikke pluspunt voor op Google.
Conclusie
De Asus Nexus 7 (Google) met Android 4.1 is een zeer basic tablet. Het uiterlijk is niet speciaal, en de bouwkwaliteit vond ik zelfs redelijk matig. De hardware daarentegen maakt een hoop goed en de batterij gaat lang mee. Het missen van 3G is even puzzelen en zorgt ook dat hij vooral in de trein of cafés met wifi handig is. Wel is er sinds deze maand een 3G-versie te koop, dus als je dat echt gaat missen, dan raad ik je die aan. Ik moet toegeven dat ik hem niet in combinatie met werk heb gebruikt. Dus mocht iemand dat wel al geprobeerd hebben, voor presentaties bijvoorbeeld) dan hoor ik dat graag in de comments. Als je nu al bijna alles met je Google-account doet, kun je met deze tablet en de Google apps al heel wat en heb je bijna geen andere apps nodig, behalve voor films en boeken. Voor 249 euro voor 32GB is dit een prima tablet, die makkelijk in je tas of binnenzak past. Of voor je kids om spelletjes op te spelen…
