Review: Sony Ericsson Xperia Pro

For a long time I have been waiting for a cool device with a brilliant keyboard. I already thought the HTC Desire Z came close, but that device was just too clumsy in my experience. The Sony Ericsson Xperia Pro has just been released, so it’s time for a test.

The Xperia Pro could be updated just after delivery to Android 2.3.4, which also allows taking screenshots, and you can take 3D photos and videos. Unfortunately I can not really test the latter, because I do not have a 3D TV with which I can play my recordings. But I can take screenshots as the best ;-).

Appearance

The Sony Ericsson Xperia Pro looks quite hefty and clunky at first, but it is a bit closer. Due to the 3.7inch screen, the device is just not too big, although a considerable size larger than the Xperia Ray. The keyboard underneath makes the device quite thick. I do not find that disturbing, if the screen had been larger, the thickness would have been a bit exaggerated. And a keyboard takes up space (except for the Motorola Milestone, but forward). There is a chrome edge around the device, and the three buttons at the bottom in the middle are chrome-colored. For the rest it is just a plastic device, available in the colors red, black and silver. I have heard from several people that the red is most stylishly finished and in itself I can agree with that ;-). Furthermore in appearance: on the top is the micro USB connection, on the right side an HDMI output, volume buttons and camera button, under a cutout for a string, and on the left the power button and audio output. On the front and back are the cameras, and on the front also the light and motion sensors, plus as just mentioned: the three buttons with ‘Back’, ‘Home’ and ‘Menu’.

Keyboard

The main eye-catcher of this device is of course the keyboard, so I want to pay extra attention to that. Unlike the Xperia Mini Pro, where the keyboard is somewhat limited by space, the keys have been given all the space here. Still, there is almost an inch of space left on both sides of the buttons. So it could have been more extensive, but the disadvantage would be that the outer button is a bit too difficult to press, your fingers can not make that angle so easily. The keys are quite flat, easy to press, and the F and J have a kind of ‘braille edge’ for the almost-blind typers, so you always know where you tap. I think this keyboard is one of the best typing keyboards on a phone. Then I do not include Blackberries, because (unfortunately?) they are still king in phone keyboards. But really, even the HTC Desire Z cannot compete. Apart from the fact that the sliding hinge of the Xperia Pro feels a lot firmer ;-).

A number of apps on the device work well with the keyboard. When you are in the standard Android e-mail program and you are reading an e-mail, you can almost immediately return an e-mail by sliding the keyboard, after you only have to select whether it is a reply to all, reply or forward . Also, with a special widget called Typing and Sending, you can immediately start typing a message as soon as you slide open the keyboard (on the home screen), after which you can choose where to place the message. Ideal. In the browser, the address bar is activated immediately when you slide the keyboard open, also handy!

Camera

Zelfs met een vooral voor zakelijk gebruik geschikte telefoon wil je natuurlijk toffe foto’s kunnen maken. Nou, met de 8.1 megapixel camera die in de Xperia Pro zit kan dat heel goed. De speciale Exmor R sensor van Sony, die ook in de Xperia Ray zit, zorgt ervoor dat je net een beetje betere foto’s maakt dan normaal, vooral in het donker. De camerasoftware doet aan rode-ogenreductie, gezichtsherkenning en zelfs lachdetectie. Weinig mis mee ook, met goed licht reageert dat vrij vlot. Verder schiet hij met een beetje daglicht ook prima video’s in 720p. In het donker kan de Xperia Pro het led-licht gebruiken om de video bij te schijnen. Dat heb ik nog niet eerder gezien, best cool.

Prestaties en overige

Wat vrij uniek is aan deze telefoon (vergeleken met andere toestellen van Sony Ericsson) is dat deze een hdmi-uitgang heeft. Kun je al je media afspelen op een tv met hdmi-aansluiting. Leuke feature! Wat er ook in zit is de Moxier suite, waarmee je de Xperia Pro volledig kunt integreren met Microsoft Exchange via Activesync. Voor veel zakelijke gebruikers een stuk handiger dan de standaard Android-mailclient.

De belkwaliteit, wellicht ook handig om dit keer te vermelden omdat ik het vaak vergeet: prima. De speaker daarentegen blijkt nog een wat curieus geval. Leg je het toestel gewoon op zijn achterkant, zodat je het scherm altijd kunt zien, dan is het geluid abominabel (‘zeer’) slecht, maar leg je hem op zijn kop, dan is het geluid voor beide partijen eigenlijk heel prima. Eén en ander kan verklaard worden door het feit dat de microfoon niet voorop maar achterop zit. Ik snap dat daar wat designkeuzes zijn gemaakt in verband met Livedock en dergelijke, maar als je dan eerst moet uitvinden dat het toestel op zijn kop beter werkt, dan vind ik dat de Xperia-toestellen (want ze hebben dat allemaal) op gebruiksvriendelijkheid wat mager scoren ineens.

Voor de rest is er vrij weinig aan te merken op het toestel. Alles werkt naar behoren, de bijgeleverde software is nuttig, hij is vrij snel, al moet je ook bij dit toestel na een tijdje wat apps gaan verplaatsen naar de sdkaart om ruimte vrij te maken en de batterij gaat voor zo’n toestel aardig lang mee (van half 8 ‘s ochtends tot 10 uur ‘s avonds ongeveer), als je niet te vaak Whatsapp gebruikt, want die app trekt je batterij vrij vlot leeg. Gelukkig kun je precies zien wat er veel energie gebruikt, via Instellingen -> Over de telefoon -> Accugebruik. Ook wifi en 3G kun je beter uitzetten als het niet nodig is.

Conclusie

Erg fijn toestel, wat mij betreft meer compleet dan de Xperia Ray, hoewel dat toestel iets handzamer is door het formaat. Het toetsenbord tikt erg fijn, is ruim opgezet en werkt goed samen met enkele apps en widgets. De camera maakt prima foto’s, de zakelijke software (Moxier en OfficeSuite) is een pré en het scherm is net niet te groot. Enkel de belkwaliteit op speaker zou wat mij betreft wat beter kunnen en vanzelfsprekend mag ook de batterijtijd, zoals bij elke smartphone tegenwoordig (behalve Blackberries), wel wat verbeterd worden. Dit toestel krijgt van mij een dikke 8.5, omdat batterijtijd zeker zakelijk hard meetelt en ook de speakerfunctie telt zakelijk (met één hand aan je oor kun je niks doen) best mee.
