Review: Nuon E-manager 1

Review: Nuon E-manager

Early in the year I was asked if I wanted to try the Nuon E manager. This allows you to keep track of how much gas and electricity you use. To see if that was of any use, I’ve been using it for a few months now.

Nuon E-manager is actually a whole system. In the meter cupboard, you attach a sensor to the glass of the electricity meter and the gas meter. There is a box that keeps the data. This box is again wirelessly connected to another box that hangs directly on the router, for the connection to the internet. The data is then sent to Nuon and is then visible via an app and a browser application. Incidentally, Nuon does not link this to your customer data.

Smart Plugs

Sounds complicated, but it was easy. A mechanic came to install everything. Since there were no sockets in the meter box yet, the technician installed them immediately. Good luck in an accident that was possible, because that is not possible in every meter cupboard. Once installed, it is important to put your devices in a special socket (Smart Plug). You have the choice of a box with six contact points or one with a single contact point. However, these boxes are not cheap. You can let the boxes know with a kind of slide that they belong to a specific location group, rooms. This way you can switch off devices per room and per contact point. That also sounds more complicated than it is.

I have my media devices together in a large power strip. With the iOS or Android app, you can turn everything on and off individually or all at once. This can also be done remotely (ie 3G), for which you will receive login details. You first see the overview with consumption for all devices, if you press a ‘block’, you can view a device separately and switch it off.

Practical use

Practically, it has helped me to see which devices use a lot in standby, and I now turn them off separately faster. For the rest, it hasn’t changed my usage that much. You still want to watch TV, watch a movie via the media player or just on the Wii. You’re not going to leave that for a few cents of electricity.

What you can see in addition to the devices separately is your total power consumption and that has opened a few eyes. Things like the oven, kettle and dishwasher cost a lot of electricity. And although you just need it, you can certainly use a dishwasher more efficiently.

Awareness

My gas meter was not suitable for the Nuon E manager. Still, I started to think about all the things that require gas, especially the boiler. I had a very simple Honeywell thermostat, not at all convenient, and via Marktplaats we (I live together) have a thermostat that regularly adjusts the temperature. You no longer have to think about lowering the temperature in the evening. And that makes a difference. Although I can still see it on the energy bill, because it will of course only come at the end of the year, I expect it to be down. You can also solve this by purchasing a special thermostat from Nuon, which you can then link to the E-manager.

Do it or not?

Vertel me erover in de reacties!
